How to scan receipts with your phone

You do not need a scanner to digitize receipts. A phone and the right app are enough. Here is how to get clean, accurate scans every time.

Step 1: Set up the shot

  • Flatten the receipt; smooth out folds and curls.
  • Place it on a dark, plain background for contrast.
  • Use even light, near a window or under a ceiling light, without shadows.

Step 2: Capture the whole receipt

Hold your phone parallel to the receipt and fit the whole thing in frame, including the top (store name) and the total. For very long receipts, step back a little rather than cutting off the bottom.

Step 3: Let AI read it

In ScanReceipt, the scan is read automatically: the merchant, date and total are filled in for you. Check them, add a tag and save.

Step 4: Make it a habit

Thermal receipts fade, and paper gets lost. Scanning right after a purchase is the single best way to keep a complete record.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to scan a long receipt?

Lay it flat, step back so the whole receipt fits in the frame, and make sure the total is clearly visible.

Should I throw away the paper receipt after scanning?

That depends on why you are keeping it. For returns, warranties or tax records, check the store’s or your local authority’s requirements.
